Seedlings and Spring

It seems as though every surface in our house that can hold seedlings is covered. We have cabbages, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet peppers, hot peppers, eggplant, and spinach sprouting all over the place. Soon it will be time to put them in the ground or in the hoop house which is ready to receive them.

Today many of the seedlings are sunning themselves on the front porch - much as I wish I were. And much as my children are as they rejoice in short sleeves! outside! tree climbing! no snow! Ben and I are putting spinach seeds and pea seeds in the ground today. In just less than two months we will have a harvest for you. A harvest that began with hard work and dreams when snow still covered everything.

I think I go a little crazy in the spring. I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt outside. To see the plants, to taste the harvest. Knowing that the land has been nurtured, knowing that people are being nourished, and loving the taste of real food.

Samantha (our six year old) is going a little crazy this spring too. She brought me a seed catalog this morning with all the items marked that she wanted to grow. I think four things weren't checked.

With the spring craziness in our veins of the world waking up, you can be sure of having lots of good food and variety in your baskets.
